Ever wondered why flexible learning is so popular?

Flexible learning at NCA (National College Australia)  means that you are free to enrol in our courses at any time, and study at your own pace, anywhere, anytime. Since all of our courses are delivered online, you don’t need to attend lectures in traditional classroom settings, and we don’t have set enrolment dates or semesters.

Flexible Course Assessments

Once enrolled in a course, each student is required to complete a number of Skill Groups, specific to their area of study. These Skill Groups are composed of knowledge assessments and performance assessments.

Knowledge Assessments

We provide you with reading materials and resources that help you to gain the essential knowledge required to complete your course. The reading materials and assessment questions (quizzes and short answer questions) are accessible via a Student Online LMS (Learning Management System) known as NCA Point.

With all your reading materials available online via the LMS, you can choose when and where to study. Since there are no classrooms and you are not required to attend lectures on specific dates and times, you have the flexibility to study anywhere, anytime (local café, library or at home). As long as you have internet access, you can use your tablet, PC or laptop to access the LMS (even at 2am in the morning!). This means that you are in complete control of your study timetable, which is one of the hallmarks of flexible learning. If however, you prefer to use hardcopy materials, you can access these as well, but at an additional cost.

Performance Assessments

NCA’s performance assessments include both observation of practical skills and work placement. Whilst these assessments are an essential component of your online studies, you have the flexibility to decide where you want these workplace assessments to take place. This means that you can apply the knowledge you learn with NCA in a work place setting of your choice (however it must be within Australia), whether that’s with your current employer or an employer more suited to your studies.

For example, if you are updating skills that will be useful in your current job, you might choose that environment as your work placement. On the other hand, if you are learning new skills in order to change your career, you can select a potential employer as your work placement and start to build a relationship with them whilst completing your studies. Whilst the flexibility to select your own preferred work placement can greatly assist your future career, if you have trouble securing a placement, our dedicated Work Placement Coordinator is available to assist you.

Self-Paced Learning

Otherwise known as e-learning, distance education, remote or online learning, flexible learning is a form of self-paced learning. This means that you can study at your own pace and you are not forced into a rigid schedule that doesn’t suit your lifestyle or your method of learning. However, whilst all NCA courses are flexible, they do have completion dates. This means that whilst you have the freedom and flexibility to access your study materials anytime via the LMS and you can self-pace your studies during the duration of the course, you need to complete the course by a set date.

What are the benefits to self-paced learning?

  • Flexible and convenient
  • 24/7 access to all materials
  • Easier work/life balance
  • Learn at your own pace
  • Study at home
  • No rigid class times or dates
  • Ideal for busy people

Flexible Student Support

Whilst flexible learning requires a high level of motivation, this does not mean that you are left on your own during your studies, because you have access to our dedicated Student Support Coordinators throughout your journey with us. For example, if you are having trouble progressing through your material, the NCA Student Engagement Coordinators help you to achieve your duration deadlines as required

With no face-to-face access to lecturers or to fellow students, one of the benefits of studying at NCA is that you can ask questions to other students via online forums (for example our NCA Student Support Facebook Group) and you can reach out to your dedicated assessor via email or phone.

The take home message about flexible learning is that you are in control of your studies, but support is available if it’s needed. With NCA, you can fit your studies into your lifestyle and other commitments, chose to study anywhere, anytime, and even have the flexibility to secure your own work placements.
